Each spring, the stunning variety of lilacs planted by Caroline Ferriday and her mother scent the gardens and show off their signature shades of purples, pinks, and even whites. Our tour will take you through the gardens and show you the numerous varieties of lilacs, how we care for them, and tips on how to care for your own lilacs.

Hempsted Houses 11 Hempstead Street, New London, CT, United States

Join us for a walking tour of the Hempstead Historic District, one of New London’s first African-American neighborhoods. Hear the stories of the people who lived in this neighborhood and explore how this diverse area evolved. The neighborhood grew up around the Joshua Hempsted House, built in 1678. Residents have included slaveholders, civic leaders, abolitionists, a Revolutionary War hero, and at least two enslaved people. Advance registration required.

The Coventry Farmers’ Market on the grounds of the Nathan Hale Homestead is an experience not to be missed. This market carries the tradition of being the largest farmers’ market in the state, featuring some of the best of Connecticut-grown, Connecticut-made products in one of the most unspoiled countryside settings in the state. Each week, the staff of the Homestead will lead a family-friendly activity to connect the history of the site with the theme of the market.

Admission to the Nathan Hale Homestead is by regular admission and is not included in the Farmers’ Market program.
