Walk through the 1st floor of the Palmer-Warner House to learn about the research and collections work being done within the house. Visitors are also welcome to explore the historic grounds, or just enjoy the view from the back porch. Visit the Barn and speak with a member of the Nation Parks Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program to learn more about the Lower Connecticut River Heritage Loop Project as part of the East Haddam Connectivity Corridor.

Woodworkers Workshop

Make a wall cabinet inspired by Connecticut Landmarks’ Collections. Join CTL interpreter and historical cabinet maker John Baron for a workshop and furniture-focused tour of the Palmer-Warner House. Participants will build a wall cabinet to take home and learn more about furniture craftsmanship in the 18th and 19th century. Bring a bagged lunch and enjoy the beautiful Palmer-Warner grounds between sessions.

LGBTQ History and the Cold War U.S. Military

Join Professor Natalie Shibley for a lecture as she offers an overview of military policy towards LGBTQ service members in the Cold War era and traces the history of challenges to the ban on LGBTQ personnel. The talk will consider how suspects and accusers experienced these events and tell this history by focusing on a Florida Air Force Base in 1948, a 1975 lawsuit challenging the expulsion of gay personnel, and the 1987 expulsion of a Naval Academy midshipman before discussing the “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy and its subsequent repeal.

Canceled: Fancy Painting Finishing Class

Between 1790 and 1840, Americans began to incorporate a worldview interest in a new decorative style called "Fancy." The movement began in Europe and emphasized interior and architectural details with brilliant color, gilding, marbling, and graining. Join interpreter and historical woodworker John Baron and staff for a workshop and lecture on these historical finishing techniques that were so popular.

Historical furniture maker John Baron leads a hands-on woodworking class making a “Chippendale” form table in the Palmer-Warner barn. This project will introduce participants to mortice and tenon joinery and nail construction while building a finished project to take home. No experience required and all materials included.

Pride Month Celebration

Two East Haddam organizations create an historic Pride Celebration! Begin at the East Haddam Historical Society (EHHS) for a presentation by Ken Simon, Emmy award-winning filmmaker, founder of Syracuse New Times, and Executive Producer of SimonPure Media, that will highlight Kate Swift and Casey Miller who helped make strides toward gender equality. After, explore EHHS’ exhibit, “Linguistic Warriors: Casey Miller and Kate Swift” that highlights their groundbreaking work changing pronouns. Continue to the Palmer-Warner House with the Connecticut Museum of Culture & History’s traveling exhibit on our state’s rich LGBTQ+ history. At 3 pm, Dusty Rader will lead a discussion on gender identity and expression. Dusty, who transitioned his senior year of high school in 2009 and has never looked back, has provided training and professional development on LGBTQ+ youth across the nation, taught Introduction to Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at CCSU, and served as their interim Coordinator for the LGBTQ Center. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for PROUD Academy.

Palmer-Warner Open Tour Saturday

Experience the home Frederic Palmer and Howard Metzger made together in what they called “the wilds of Connecticut.” Explore the property's Colonial-era history to understand why Palmer was interested in purchasing the home with his mother in 1936. Learn about the collection of letters and diaries, photographs, historic furnishings, and decorative arts used to reconstruct their lives together. When weather permits, explore the grounds to see the constructed landscape Metzger and Palmer created.
