Lilac Walks

Thank you for your interest in the lilacs at the Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden. Unfortunately, the cold winter and recent bouts of significant rain have impacted the quality and visibility of this year’s blooms, and the plants are now past their prime. Scheduled Lilac Walks will proceed to highlight the remaining flowers and discuss the gardens’ history and care.

When you think of the Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden, you think of lilacs. Each spring, the stunning variety of lilacs curated by Caroline Woolsey Ferriday and her mother scent the gardens and show off their fleeting blossoms in shades of purples, pinks, and even whites. Walk the grounds and garden with our guide to learn about the long history of the lilacs on the property and how we care for them.

Lilac tours take place on select days and require tickets. See the full line-up here. Advance registration is recommended as space is limited and these tours sell out! This tour does not include a house tour; tickets for house tours may be purchased separately.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather, as this program takes place outdoors. In case of cancellation due to severe weather, registrants will be notified at the email address on file.

If you have any questions, please contact Site Administrator Peg Shimer at bellamy.ferriday@ctlandmarks.org or call (203) 266-7596.

Following Death: Cemetery Walk & Talk

New Englanders have always shown particular care for their dearly departed. Explore the burial customs, traditions, and superstitions around death in the region from colonial times through the 19th century with Dean Massey, an urban planning researcher at a university in Boston. Following Massey’s talk, a short walk to the Warner Cemetery will offer participants the opportunity to closely examine epitaphs and iconography up close, as well as engage in a thoughtful discussion about the rich diversity of New England’s remembrance practices.

Dean Massey lives in Providence, Rhode Island. He has strong ties to Connecticut: he grew up in a small town east of the river filled with historic cemeteries, studied at Connecticut College, and worked at the Connecticut General Assembly. In his spare time, he enjoys visiting house museums, tracking down gravestones by masters like Zerubbabel Collins, and hiking in the woods. He has visited every Connecticut Landmarks property, starting with the Nathan Hale Homestead as a child.

This program will take place at 2 pm and 3 pm.

Interested in touring the Palmer-Warner House? Tours will be held after each session at 3 pm and 4 pm. Tour tickets can be purchased as an add-on to your program tickets through the same event ticketing link.

The Vexed Visitation: An Immersive Victorian Halloween Tale in Partnership with Escapism Productions

1885 – The residents of Blackwood Lake have received a curious letter from the Widow Whitlock. Mrs. Josephine Whitlock invites you to celebrate the life of the recently deceased Luther Whitlock. We understand our family has been quite reclusive, but this recently widowed woman and her only child could really use your support at this difficult time. The town is abuzz. What kind of support is this mysterious family looking for? Come to the visitation to find out what dark and dangerous secrets the Whitlock family are hiding.

Connecticut Landmarks is excited to partner with Escapism Productions at the Isham-Terry House to create an original supernatural story. Come and explore the House and the story in this unique production. We are waiting for you to escape with us.
