Update (10/10/2025): Due to the forecast of inclement weather on Sunday, 10/12, we have made the decision to cancel the Hempstead Historic District Walking Tour. We hope you will join us at the Hempsted Houses on 10/25 For Hempsted Halloween!

Join us for a walking tour of the Hempstead Historic District, one of New London’s first African-American neighborhoods. Hear the stories of the people who lived in this neighborhood and explore how this diverse area evolved. The neighborhood grew up around the Joshua Hempsted House, built in 1678. Residents have included slaveholders, civic leaders, abolitionists, a Revolutionary War hero, and at least two enslaved people. Offered in collaboration with Thames River Heritage Park. Advance registration required.

$10/Person, $5/CTL Member

This walking tour will begin at the Hempsted Houses, located at 11 Hempstead Street in New London, CT. Street parking is available in the area. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather, as this program will take place outdoors. In case of cancelation due to severe weather, registrants will be notified at the email address on file.
