Interested in learning more about the history and importance of preserved plant species known as herbaria? Stop in the visitor center to pick up a signed copy of In the Herbarium and meet its author, Maura C. Flannery. Professor emerita of biology at St. John’s University, New York, and research affiliate in the A. C. Moore Herbarium at the University of South Carolina, Flannery’s book testifies to the central role of herbaria in the history of plant study and to their continued value to biologists, gardeners, artists, students, and citizen-scientists. By sharing the history of herbaria from early collections to present-day digitization, Flannery explores its importance in tracking climate change, molecular evolution, and even how herbaria can be linked to Indigenous peoples, collectors, or scientists.
