Phelps-Hatheway staff will guide you stepbystep as you create a unique work of art with blooms grown by Suffield’s own Willow View Farm. This workshop is sure to bring a smile to your face as you work those muscles to make a masterpiece!

Join best-selling author Martha Hall Kelly to discuss her books (Lilac Girls, Lost Roses, Sunflower Sisters, The Golden Doves) and the history that sparked her imagination over afternoon tea at the exquisite Winvian Farm. This intimate event will include a talk and Q&A from the author herself, as well as a proper English tea served with delicious light refreshments. The Stone Walls and Structures of England and New England: An Evolution

Accomplished stone artisan, gardener, and horticulturist Andrew Pighills discusses the evolution of stone walls and structures from colonial times to present day, and how they fit into the garden and broader landscape past and present. Born in Yorkshire England, Andrew received formal training with The Royal Horticultural Society at Harlow Carr Gardens. Andrew spent thirty-one years building dry stone walls in the Yorkshire Dales and English Lake District and continues his work here in the U.S. as a professional member of The Dry-Stone Walling Association of Great Britain.

Summer Pipes & Cider

Sip cider and connect with Scotland during a trail walk around the beautiful Palmer-Warner grounds led by Coreyanne Armstrong and Portland & District Pipers. Enjoy local cider tastings from Yankee Cider Co. including a signature “Dunstaffnage” bourbon designed to take you to the Scottish Moors through hints of Highland peat smoke. Bring your friends to test your knowledge in a round of Celtic-themed pub trivia, with prizes for first- and second-place teams.

Frederick Law Olmsted’s Hartford

Traverse the streets and sites of Frederick Law Olmsted’s Hartford to commemorate this illustrious native son on this walking tour. Highlights include the Butler-McCook House & Garden, Olmsted’s birth site, Bushnell Park, the Capitol Grounds, High Street, Ann Street, and Keney Clock Tower, with optional visit (by personal car) to Olmsted’s gravesite in Old North Cemetery at the conclusion.

Fox walkway, among others.

Each spring, the stunning variety of lilacs curated by Caroline Ferriday and her mother scent the gardens and show off their fleeting blossoms in shades of purples, pinks, and even whites. Tour the gardens to learn about the long history of the lilacs on the property and how we care for them.


Lilac tours take place on select days at 11:30 am & 2:30 pm and require tickets. See the full line-up here. This tour does not include a house tour; tickets for house tours may be purchased separately.
