SUMMARY:Winter Clothing Drive
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut Landmarks’ Hempsted Houses have partnered with the Homeless Hospitality Center in New London\, Fiddleheads Food Co-op\, and the Covenant House of New London to help give the gift of warmth to the New London community this winter season with a winter clothing drive. All donated items will go to the Homeless Hospitality Center and the Covenant House who will distribute the clothing to those in need. \nFrom December 5\, 2025 through January 10\, 2026\, we will be accepting new hats and gloves in all sizes\, and new and gently-used coats in all sizes. Donations of children’s winter coats are especially appreciated. \nDrop-Off Location (look for designated donation box): \n\nFiddleheads Food Co-op\, 13 Broad St\, New London (view map) during business hours (8 am-9 pm)\n\nAbout our Community Partners: \nFounded in 2006\, HHC collaborates with dozens of public and private programs and agencies to address the underlying causes of homelessness for each person and help them find permanent housing as quickly as possible. \nFounded in 2008\, Fiddleheads Food Cooperative is a cooperatively owned grocery store in New London\, Connecticut that is open to all. Fiddleheads Food Co-op works to create a locally focused\, sustainable and health-driven food system and exists so that Southeastern Connecticut is a healthy\, robust\, just\, and inclusive community. \nThe Covenant House of New London has provided emergency shelter for families and individuals for over 40 years. Their mission is to provide shelter\, resources\, and guidance to help individuals and families transition from homelessness to independent living with dignity and respect. \n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Site Administrator Lynette Fisher at lynette.fisher@ctlandmarks.org.

SUMMARY:Stitching History with America's Tapestry at the Butler-McCook House & Garden
DESCRIPTION:Taking place during the Butler-McCook House & Garden’s Open Tour Day\, stitchers from America’s Tapestry will be joined by local artists from Hartford Stitch for an afternoon of fun\, creativity\, and history. Join us to stitch history together – no experience required! \nAmerica’s Tapestry is a nationwide community project featuring 13 hand-embroidered panels\, one for each of the original colonies\, depicting diverse stories from the American Revolution. Each panel is crafted by volunteers from New Hampshire to Georgia\, and visitors are invited to contribute their own stitches to the Connecticut panel. All materials will be provided! \nThe Connecticut panel highlights the story of Hannah Bunce Watson\, the first female publisher of the Connecticut Courant (now the Hartford Courant). After the passing of her husband\, Hannah\, who lived just a stone’s throw from the Butler-McCook House & Garden\, joined forces with Sarah Butler to keep the newspaper in print\, offering timely and encouraging source of news to patriot readers. \nRegistration is not required for the stitching event. Tours of the Butler McCook House\, which will be festively decorated for the holidays\, are available for regular admission fees.
