SUMMARY:Pastel Paintings Art Exhibit: Gina Trusiewicz
DESCRIPTION:Stop into Phelps-Hatheway’s Visitor Center for the Pastel Paintings exhibition by Gina Trusiewicz. With a longtime interest in art\, Trusiewicz developed her craft in an online class during the pandemic. Her interest in nature\, animals\, and plants\, combined with her certification as a Master Gardener\, has inspired the work for this exhibit–capturing everyday moments in West Hartford or right from her own backyard through the medium of soft pastel sticks. She also aims to capture the feelings these moments evoke; whether it be the brightness of the sunshine\, the iridescence of a flower\, or the sweet look on the face of a neighborhood bear as he has finished raiding the neighbor’s garbage can. \nAn opening reception will be held on Saturday\, May 17 during the Suffield Garden Club’s 47th Annual May Market. Gina Trusiewicz will be on site from 1 pm-3 pm. \nDuring the museum’s open tour day on September 14\, Trusiewicz will be onsite from 1 pm–2 pm to demonstrate the art of pastel painting. \nThe exhibit will be open during the property’s regular open hours this season. We hope you will join us at the Hempsted Houses on 10/25 For Hempsted Halloween! \nJoin us for a walking tour of the Hempstead Historic District\, one of New London’s first African-American neighborhoods. Hear the stories of the people who lived in this neighborhood and explore how this diverse area evolved. The neighborhood grew up around the Joshua Hempsted House\, built in 1678. Residents have included slaveholders\, civic leaders\, abolitionists\, a Revolutionary War hero\, and at least two enslaved people. Offered in collaboration with Thames River Heritage Park. SUMMARY:Phelps-Hatheway Open Tour Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the museum to be transported to the 18th and 19th centuries and learn about the lives of those who built\, lived in\, and preserved the house. Stop into the visitor’s center for the Pastel Paintings exhibition by artist Gina Trusiewicz. With a longtime interest in art\, Trusiewicz developed her craft in an online class during the pandemic. Her interest in nature\, animals\, and plants\, combined with her certification as a Master Gardener\, has inspired her work–capturing everyday moments\, and the feelings they evoke\, in West Hartford or right from her own backyard.  \n \nSuffield native Shem Burbank built a center chimney structure in 1761 where he and his wife Anna Fitch Burbank raised nine children. Although well-appointed for the mid 18th century\, the Burbank house reflected conservative trends in design popular for the period. Financial hardship forced Burbank to sell his house to Oliver Phelps in 1788. The youngest of 17 children from neighboring Windsor\, CT\, Oliver Phelps was apprenticed to a Suffield merchant at an early age. During the Revolution\, he skillfully served as Deputy Commissary under George Washington. A budding land speculator after the War\, Phelps commissioned the addition of a substantial wing decorated with imported Parisian wallpaper in 1794. From the stylish new rooms\, Phelps peddled a vision of American expansion to New Englanders looking for a new life in the west. Phelps’ attempts to sell significant swaths of Seneca Nation land as part of Connecticut’s Western Reserve proved unsuccessful; within a decade\, his fortunes had collapsed. Understand the role of Connecticut in the American Revolution\, examine colonial era trade and commercial exchange\, consider land and real estate speculation and Indigenous people’s land rights\, and observe the ways we display wealth and status in our homes. \nRegister Now\n\nAdvance registration for tours appreciated\, but walk-ups welcome as space permits! DESCRIPTION:New Englanders have always shown particular care for their dearly departed. Explore the burial customs\, traditions\, and superstitions around death in the region from colonial times through the 19th century with Dean Massey\, an urban planning researcher at Northeastern University. Following Massey’s talk\, a short walk to the Warner Cemetery will offer participants the opportunity to closely examine epitaphs and iconography up close\, as well as engage in a thoughtful discussion about the rich diversity of New England’s remembrance practices. \nDean Massey lives in Providence\, Rhode Island. He has strong ties to Connecticut: he grew up in a small town east of the river filled with historic cemeteries\, studied at Connecticut College\, and worked at the Connecticut General Assembly. In his spare time\, he enjoys visiting house museums\, tracking down gravestones by masters like Zerubbabel Collins\, and hiking in the woods. Afterwards\, test your knowledge by breaking into two groups to explore the Homestead and try your hands at paranormal investigating.  \nTickets are $30/Person\, $25/CTL Member  \n\nAppropriate footwear and reliable flashlights strongly recommended.
