SUMMARY:Preserving Historic Main Street Hartford | Jane's Walk CT
DESCRIPTION:Leaving from the Butler-McCook House & Garden\, this walk will proceed north up Main Street to the G. Fox Building along the east side\, and return to Butler-McCook along the west side with a collaborative stop at the Ancient Burying Ground. This walk is a variant of our “Discovering Main Street Hartford” walk\, discussing changes to Main Street and encouraging participant discussion about what has been saved and why\, as well as inviting participants to share their recollections about Main Street and its importance. \nRegister through Preservation CT\n\nThis walk is offered free as part of Jane’s Walk CT in collaboration with the Ancient Burying Ground.  Jane’s Walk is a global festival of free\, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by community activist Jane Jacobs\, held annually on the first Saturday in May. This day of community engagement encourages people to share stories with their neighborhoods\, discover aspects of their communities\, and connect with their neighbors.  \nThis program is part of our Historic Hartford Walking Tours series\, where we forge new paths through Hartford’s history! SUMMARY:Isham-Terry House Tour: Virtual Program
DESCRIPTION:Join the Avon Free Public Library on Zoom for a virtual tour of the Isham-Terry House! \nA stalwart survivor of once the most elite Hartford neighborhood\, the Isham-Terry House is a time capsule of genteel life in turn-of-the-century Hartford. In 1896\, Dr. Oliver Isham purchased the 1854 Italianate house for his medical practice and as a home for himself\, his parents and his three sisters. His sisters\, Julia and Charlotte\, lived in the house until their deaths in the 1970s as urban renewal claimed many of the houses in the once-grand neighborhood. Explore this beloved family home to learn about the booming industries and culture of Hartford in the late 19th and early 20th centuries\, understand medical practice and public health at this time\, and learn more about the Isham and Terry families through the items they owned.   \nThis program will be led by Isham-Terry volunteer interpreter\, Jan Beatty. After retiring as the art and architecture editor in the College Division of Oxford University Press\, Jan became a docent at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. SUMMARY:Pastel Paintings Art Exhibit: Gina Trusiewicz
DESCRIPTION:Stop into Phelps-Hatheway’s Visitor Center for the Pastel Paintings exhibition by Gina Trusiewicz. With a longtime interest in art\, Trusiewicz developed her craft in an online class during the pandemic. Her interest in nature\, animals\, and plants\, combined with her certification as a Master Gardener\, has inspired the work for this exhibit–capturing everyday moments in West Hartford or right from her own backyard through the medium of soft pastel sticks. She also aims to capture the feelings these moments evoke; whether it be the brightness of the sunshine\, the iridescence of a flower\, or the sweet look on the face of a neighborhood bear as he has finished raiding the neighbor’s garbage can. \nAn opening reception will be held on Saturday\, May 17 during the Suffield Garden Club’s 47th Annual May Market. Gina Trusiewicz will be on site from 1 pm-3 pm. \nDuring the museum’s open tour day on September 14\, Trusiewicz will be onsite from 1 pm–2 pm to demonstrate the art of pastel painting. \nThe exhibit will be open during the property’s regular open hours this season. DESCRIPTION:The Isham-Terry House is a time capsule of genteel life in turn-of-the-century Hartford. In 1896\, Dr. Oliver Isham purchased the 1854 Italianate house for his medical practice and as a home for himself\, his parents and his three sisters. His sisters\, Julia and Charlotte\, lived in the house until their deaths in the 1970s as urban renewal claimed many of the houses in the once-grand neighborhood.
