SUMMARY:Pastel Paintings Art Exhibit: Gina Trusiewicz
DESCRIPTION:Stop into Phelps-Hatheway’s Visitor Center for the Pastel Paintings exhibition by Gina Trusiewicz. With a longtime interest in art\, Trusiewicz developed her craft in an online class during the pandemic. Her interest in nature\, animals\, and plants\, combined with her certification as a Master Gardener\, has inspired the work for this exhibit–capturing everyday moments in West Hartford or right from her own backyard through the medium of soft pastel sticks. She also aims to capture the feelings these moments evoke; whether it be the brightness of the sunshine\, the iridescence of a flower\, or the sweet look on the face of a neighborhood bear as he has finished raiding the neighbor’s garbage can. \nAn opening reception will be held on Saturday\, May 17 during the Suffield Garden Club’s 47th Annual May Market. Gina Trusiewicz will be on site from 1 pm-3 pm. \nDuring the museum’s open tour day on September 14\, Trusiewicz will be onsite from 1 pm–2 pm to demonstrate the art of pastel painting. \nThe exhibit will be open during the property’s regular open hours this season. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Hale Homestead during the Coventry Farmers’ Market to join stitchers from America’s Tapestry and local artists from Hartford Stitch for a morning of fun\, creativity\, and history. Join us to stitch history together – no experience required! \nAmerica’s Tapestry is a nationwide community project featuring 13 hand-embroidered panels\, one for each of the original colonies\, depicting diverse stories from the American Revolution. Each panel is crafted by volunteers from New Hampshire to Georgia\, and visitors are invited to contribute their own stitches to the Connecticut panel. All materials will be provided! \nThe Connecticut panel highlights the story of Hannah Bunce Watson\, the first female publisher of the Connecticut Courant (now the Hartford Courant). Hear the stories of the people who lived in this neighborhood and explore how this diverse area evolved. The neighborhood grew up around the Joshua Hempsted House\, built in 1678. SUMMARY:Phelps-Hatheway Open Tour Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the museum to be transported to the 18th and 19th centuries and learn about the lives of those who built\, lived in\, and preserved the house. Stop into the visitor’s center for the Pastel Paintings exhibition by artist Gina Trusiewicz. With a longtime interest in art\, Trusiewicz developed her craft in an online class during the pandemic. Her interest in nature\, animals\, and plants\, combined with her certification as a Master Gardener\, has inspired her work–capturing everyday moments\, and the feelings they evoke\, in West Hartford or right from her own backyard.  \n \nSuffield native Shem Burbank built a center chimney structure in 1761 where he and his wife Anna Fitch Burbank raised nine children. Although well-appointed for the mid 18th century\, the Burbank house reflected conservative trends in design popular for the period. Financial hardship forced Burbank to sell his house to Oliver Phelps in 1788. The youngest of 17 children from neighboring Windsor\, CT\, Oliver Phelps was apprenticed to a Suffield merchant at an early age. During the Revolution\, he skillfully served as Deputy Commissary under George Washington. A budding land speculator after the War\, Phelps commissioned the addition of a substantial wing decorated with imported Parisian wallpaper in 1794. From the stylish new rooms\, Phelps peddled a vision of American expansion to New Englanders looking for a new life in the west. Phelps’ attempts to sell significant swaths of Seneca Nation land as part of Connecticut’s Western Reserve proved unsuccessful; within a decade\, his fortunes had collapsed. DESCRIPTION:New Englanders have always shown particular care for their dearly departed. Explore the burial customs\, traditions\, and superstitions around death in the region from colonial times through the 19th century with Dean Massey\, an urban planning researcher at Northeastern University. Following Massey’s talk\, a short walk to the Warner Cemetery will offer participants the opportunity to closely examine epitaphs and iconography up close\, as well as engage in a thoughtful discussion about the rich diversity of New England’s remembrance practices. \nDean Massey lives in Providence\, Rhode Island. He has strong ties to Connecticut: he grew up in a small town east of the river filled with historic cemeteries\, studied at Connecticut College\, and worked at the Connecticut General Assembly. In his spare time\, he enjoys visiting house museums\, tracking down gravestones by masters like Zerubbabel Collins\, and hiking in the woods. This November\, we invite you to return to celebrate the conclusion of this wonderful project with Phelps-Hatheway staff\, Studio TKM Associates\, and special guest speakers who will address the unique nature of the papers and the importance of the conservation work. Following the presentations\, there will be a champagne toast to the unique project and the future of Phelps-Hatheway’s exquisite collection – featuring delicious macarons. As daylight wanes\, explore the museum to hear from Studio TKM conservators and museum staff who will be answering questions about the history of the house and the wallpaper project. \nReserve Tickets\nProceeds support wallpaper conservation. Learn more about the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden wallpaper project here.  \nSupport for this program comes from the Suffield Greater Together Community Fund. \nPresenter Bios\nSteve Larson “Réveillon at Adelphi”  \nSteve Larson co-founded Adelphi Paper Hangings in 1999\, in conjunction with Chris Ohrstrom. His exposure to wallpaper as a child came from the wallpaper pattern books lining the lower shelves of the paint and decorating store which his father managed. His early artistic career\, after studying ceramics at the University of Washington in Seattle\, centered on producing sculptures\, many of which were of papier maché covered with 1950s and 60s wallpapers\, found in basement storerooms and attics of small-town paint stores. Eventually\, the colors and styles of these mid-century papers became an impediment to his work\, and he considered the possibility of producing his own papers. In 1997\, a serendipitous opportunity to work at the American Paperstaining Manufactory at the Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown\, an operation also founded by Chris Ohrstrom\, allowed him to learn historic techniques firsthand. At Adelphi’s inception Steve focused on formulating paints and refining printing techniques for simple block printed papers. Since then\, he has investigated and reproduced traditional flocked papers\, plain varnished papers as well as patterns with both irisé print and irisé ground colors. Newly commissioned reproduction projects continue to present the opportunity to experiment with techniques and materials used by 18th and 19th century wallpaper manufacturers.  \nPeggy Wishart “The History of Wallpaper”  \nIn 2013\, Peggy accepted an IMLS grant-funded position to catalogue a large gift of historic wallpapers and update records for hundreds of extant pieces in the collection of Historic New England. Mentored by Richard Nylander\, Historic New England curator emeritus and internationally recognized wallpaper expert\, Peggy was enthralled by the history\, designs\, and production of the papers. Peggy began to pay closer attention to all things wallpaper and learned that her grandfather and father had both worked in the wallpaper and textile printing industries – her grandfather overseeing printing in the mills of Fall River and Columbia\, South Carolina and her father as a colorist-chemist. Peggy realized that the wallpaper and textile patterns that surrounded her when growing up had literally been produced\, in part\, by her own family. Peggy sees her continued interest in wallpaper as carrying on a family tradition. Peggy studied archaeology as an undergraduate at the University of Connecticut and holds a master’s degree in American and New England Studies from the University of Southern Maine. With over 20 years of experience\, she has held positions as an archaeologist\, historic sites manager\, registrar\, cataloguer and object collection manager. Currently\, she is the Research Center Director for the Old York Historical Society in York\, Maine.  \nStudio TKM Associates and Deborah LaCamera “Updates from the Phelps-Hatheway Wallpaper Conservation Project”  \nFor more than thirty years\, the conservators of Studio TKM Associates have provided conservation services for institutions that lack conservation facilities of their own or that seek additional specialization\, including museums\, libraries\, archives\, historical societies\, private and public agencies in North America\, Europe and Asia\, as well as galleries and individuals. We specialize in the conservation of fine art (old and modern master drawings\, paintings and graphics)\, decorative and historic works (architectural drawings and prints\, maps and globes\, historic wallpaper and murals\, documents\, artifacts\, ephemera and parchment)\, and Asian paintings and prints on paper and silk. The conservators of Studio TKM Associates received their academic training at ANAGPIC accredited graduate programs in conservation and acquired years of practical experience at institutional conservation departments throughout North America. We proudly serve as active members of national and international professional organizations\, and remain current with developments in conservation practice by regularly attending and contributing to professional conferences\, publications\, and advanced training seminars and workshops. Studio TKM Associates\, Inc. is a certified Women Business Enterprise with the Supplier Diversity Office of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  \n Deborah LaCamera is Partner and Senior Conservator at Studio TKM. SUMMARY:Winter Clothing Drive
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut Landmarks’ Hempsted Houses have partnered with the Homeless Hospitality Center in New London\, Fiddleheads Food Co-op\, and the Covenant House of New London to help give the gift of warmth to the New London community this winter season with a winter clothing drive. All donated items will go to the Homeless Hospitality Center and the Covenant House who will distribute the clothing to those in need. \nFrom December 5\, 2025 through January 10\, 2026\, we will be accepting new hats and gloves in all sizes\, and new and gently-used coats in all sizes. Donations of children’s winter coats are especially appreciated. \nDrop-Off Location (look for designated donation box): \n\nFiddleheads Food Co-op\, 13 Broad St\, New London (view map) during business hours (8 am-9 pm)\n\nAbout our Community Partners: \nFounded in 2006\, HHC collaborates with dozens of public and private programs and agencies to address the underlying causes of homelessness for each person and help them find permanent housing as quickly as possible. \nFounded in 2008\, Fiddleheads Food Cooperative is a cooperatively owned grocery store in New London\, Connecticut that is open to all. SUMMARY:Stitching History with America's Tapestry at the Butler-McCook House & Garden
DESCRIPTION:Taking place during the Butler-McCook House & Garden’s Open Tour Day\, stitchers from America’s Tapestry will be joined by local artists from Hartford Stitch for an afternoon of fun\, creativity\, and history. Join us to stitch history together – no experience required! \nAmerica’s Tapestry is a nationwide community project featuring 13 hand-embroidered panels\, one for each of the original colonies\, depicting diverse stories from the American Revolution. Each panel is crafted by volunteers from New Hampshire to Georgia\, and visitors are invited to contribute their own stitches to the Connecticut panel. All materials will be provided! \nThe Connecticut panel highlights the story of Hannah Bunce Watson\, the first female publisher of the Connecticut Courant (now the Hartford Courant). After the passing of her husband\, Hannah\, who lived just a stone’s throw from the Butler-McCook House & Garden\, joined forces with Sarah Butler to keep the newspaper in print\, offering timely and encouraging source of news to patriot readers. \nRegistration is not required for the stitching event. Tours of the Butler McCook House\, which will be festively decorated for the holidays\, are available for regular admission fees. Reserve tour tickets here » \n\nAdmission to the America’s Tapestry event is free. Tours of the museum are available for regular admission. Advance registration for tours appreciated\, but walk-ups welcome as space permits! Offered in collaboration with the Suffield Historical Society. \nChildren are especially welcome to participate in the easy 1-mile journey\, as this walk will contain more sparkle than darkness and is suitable for even our youngest visitors. \nBuy Tickets\n\nPlease dress for the weather as this event takes place outdoors.
