DESCRIPTION:The Palmer-Warner House is open for tours on Saturdays\, June 1-22 from 12 noon–4 pm in celebration of Pride Month! Specialty tours of the home will introduce visitors to its residents and explore the themes of Equity\, Unity\, and Reflection. A Historic Timeline of Connecticut’s LGBTQ Community on loan from the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History will be on view in the barn. Join us on Saturday\, June 29\, for our culminating celebration in partnership with the East Haddam Historical Society. \nRegister Now\n\nExplore the contemporary lives of preservation architect Frederic Palmer and his partner Howard Metzger. Together\, they created a safe space for friends and family to gather and experience life unrestrained by societal norms within the beautifully constructed landscape they designed and personally maintained. \nThe 1738 residence was built by John and Mehitable (Chapman Richardson) Warner. Later generations of the Warner family would become blacksmiths\, and many of their pieces were collected by Frederic Palmer and can be seen throughout the house today. \nA visit to the site includes a behind-the-scenes tour in which guests can learn about the collection of personal diaries and photos used to reconstruct the lives of Frederic and Howard\, providing an opportunity for guests to discuss society’s impact on the thoughts and actions of the house’s former residents. \n\nAdvance reservations for tours appreciated\, but walk-ups welcome as space permits! Tours leave on the hour; last tour departs at 3:00 pm. \nPurchasing an Adult or Child ticket secures your spot on a timed tour of the Palmer-Warner House\, and provides access to the scenic grounds and the exhibit in the barn. Learn more about that event here. \nJoin Joseph McGill of the Slave Dwelling Project as well as staff from the Hempsted Houses and the Shaw Mansion as we continue the conversation around the truthful narrative of American history and the legacies of slavery. \nThe Shaw Mansion was built in 1756 for captain Nathaniel Shaw and was home to ten enslaved people. On his deathbed\, Nathaniel Shaw Jr. emancipated all ten enslaved people in 1781. During the conversation\, participants will learn about the lives of Caesar Shaw\, Celia Shaw\, James Tilley\, and Prince who were four of the ten enslaved people on the property. \n\nThis program is part of the Hempsted Houses’ Juneteenth Festival. DESCRIPTION:The Palmer-Warner House is open for tours on Saturdays\, June 1-22 from 12 noon–4 pm in celebration of Pride Month! Specialty tours of the home will introduce visitors to its residents and explore the themes of Equity\, Unity\, and Reflection. A Historic Timeline of Connecticut’s LGBTQ Community on loan from the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History will be on view in the barn. Join us on Saturday\, June 29\, for our culminating celebration in partnership with the East Haddam Historical Society. \nRegister Now\n\nExplore the contemporary lives of preservation architect Frederic Palmer and his partner Howard Metzger. Together\, they created a safe space for friends and family to gather and experience life unrestrained by societal norms within the beautifully constructed landscape they designed and personally maintained. \nThe 1738 residence was built by John and Mehitable (Chapman Richardson) Warner. Later generations of the Warner family would become blacksmiths\, and many of their pieces were collected by Frederic Palmer and can be seen throughout the house today. \nA visit to the site includes a behind-the-scenes tour in which guests can learn about the collection of personal diaries and photos used to reconstruct the lives of Frederic and Howard\, providing an opportunity for guests to discuss society’s impact on the thoughts and actions of the house’s former residents. \n\nAdvance reservations for tours appreciated\, but walk-ups welcome as space permits! Tours leave on the hour; last tour departs at 3:00 pm. \nPurchasing an Adult or Child ticket secures your spot on a timed tour of the Palmer-Warner House\, and provides access to the scenic grounds and the exhibit in the barn. Walk-up tours will be accommodated as space permits. SUMMARY:Phelps-Hatheway Open Tour Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Step inside the museum to be transported to the 18th and 19th centuries and learn about the lives of those who built\, lived in\, and preserved the house. Winning submissions from the 2023-2024 Trees for Suffield Photo Contest will be on display in the Visitor’s Center. \nFor this special Open Tour Sunday\, Joseph McGill\, founder of The Slave Dwelling Project and a history consultant for Magnolia Plantation in Charleston\, SC\, will sign copies of his most recent book\, Sleeping with the Ancestors\, from 1 pm-2 pm. His book will be available for purchase in the museum gift shop in the Visitor’s Center. Learn more about Joseph McGill here. \nSuffield native Shem Burbank built a center chimney structure in 1761 where he and his wife Anna Fitch Burbank raised nine children. Although well-appointed for the mid 18th century\, the Burbank house reflected conservative trends in design popular for the period. Financial hardship forced Burbank to sell his house to Oliver Phelps in 1788. The youngest of 17 children from neighboring Windsor\, CT\, Oliver Phelps was apprenticed to a Suffield merchant at an early age. During the Revolution\, he skillfully served as Deputy Commissary under George Washington. A budding land speculator after the War\, Phelps commissioned the addition of a substantial wing decorated with imported Parisian wallpaper in 1794. From the stylish new rooms\, Phelps peddled a vision of American expansion to New Englanders looking for a new life in the west. Phelps’ attempts to sell significant swaths of Seneca Nation land as part of Connecticut’s Western Reserve proved unsuccessful; within a decade\, his fortunes had collapsed. Understand the role of Connecticut in the American Revolution\, examine colonial era trade and commercial exchange\, consider land and real estate speculation and Indigenous people’s land rights\, and observe the ways we display wealth and status in our homes. \nRegister Now\n\nAdvance registration for tours appreciated\, but walk-ups welcome as space permits! His sisters\, Julia and Charlotte\, lived in the house until their deaths in the 1970s as urban renewal claimed many of the houses in the once-grand neighborhood. A Historic Timeline of Connecticut’s LGBTQ Community on loan from the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History will be on view in the barn. Join us on Saturday\, June 29\, for our culminating celebration in partnership with the East Haddam Historical Society. \nRegister Now\n\nExplore the contemporary lives of preservation architect Frederic Palmer and his partner Howard Metzger. Together\, they created a safe space for friends and family to gather and experience life unrestrained by societal norms within the beautifully constructed landscape they designed and personally maintained. \nThe 1738 residence was built by John and Mehitable (Chapman Richardson) Warner. Later generations of the Warner family would become blacksmiths\, and many of their pieces were collected by Frederic Palmer and can be seen throughout the house today. \nA visit to the site includes a behind-the-scenes tour in which guests can learn about the collection of personal diaries and photos used to reconstruct the lives of Frederic and Howard\, providing an opportunity for guests to discuss society’s impact on the thoughts and actions of the house’s former residents. \n\nAdvance reservations for tours appreciated\, but walk-ups welcome as space permits! Tours leave on the hour; last tour departs at 3:00 pm. \nPurchasing an Adult or Child ticket secures your spot on a timed tour of the Palmer-Warner House\, and provides access to the scenic grounds and the exhibit in the barn. Walk-up tours will be accommodated as space permits. Gardens will be open rain or shine. \nBellamy-Ferriday House & Garden  \nRoam the beautiful\, landscaped areas of our 10-acre property. Over a 70-year period\, Eliza Ferriday and her daughter\, Caroline\, created a garden showcasing their love of roses\, lilacs and peonies. Today\, the garden is maintained with the aid of the Watertown Garden Club. Bellamy-Ferriday joined CT Historic Gardens in 2004 as a founding member. Our staff will be on hand to answer questions.   \nBook a guided tour of the museum interiors » \n\nButler-McCook House & Garden \nInspired by their European travels\, Eliza Butler and Mary Sheldon adapted an original plan by the Swiss landscape architect Jacob Weidenmann for their Victorian ornamental garden on Hartford’s Main Street. The formal parterre garden features low boxwood hedges with beds of roses\, perennials\, and annuals connected by winding stone paths. It is lovingly cared for by the West Hartford Garden Club. Butler-McCook joined CT Historic Gardens in 2004 as a founding member.  \nThe Butler-McCook House & Garden is thrilled to be featured on this year’s Historic Gardens Day poster! We will host this year’s poster contest winner artist Michelle Hawran on-site\, who will be painting in our garden.
