SUMMARY:CT Trails Day: Stories of Freedom – Suffield's Black History
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with the Suffield Historical Society and Kent Memorial Library\, join staff to learn the stories of individuals who resided on Suffield’s North and South Main Streets yet have long been erased from memory. A reception will follow in the Visitor Center. \nregister now\n\nThis program is offered FREE as part of Connecticut Trails Day. The first weekend of June\, trail lovers across Connecticut head outside to hike\, play\, ride\, explore\, climb\, run\, and paddle. \nPlease wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather\, as this program will take place outdoors. In case of cancellation due to severe weather\, registrants will be notified at the email address on file.  \nAdvance registration is required. DESCRIPTION:On Historic Gardens Day\, sixteen historic gardens around the state welcome you to explore a variety of beautiful garden styles from different periods. Enjoy free admission to visit the gardens of three participating Connecticut Landmarks sites! Advance reservation for house tours via the link below for each property. Gardens will be open rain or shine. \nBellamy-Ferriday House & Garden\nGarden & Grounds Open 12 noon–4 pm \nRoam the beautiful\, landscaped areas of our 10-acre property. Over a 70-year period\, Eliza Ferriday and her daughter\, Caroline\, created a garden showcasing their love of roses\, lilacs and peonies. Today\, the garden is maintained by staff. Bellamy-Ferriday joined CT Historic Gardens in 2004 as a founding member. Our staff will be on hand to answer questions.   \nBook a guided tour of the museum interiors » \nButler-McCook House & Garden \nGarden & Grounds Open 9 am–1 pm \nInspired by their European travels\, Eliza Butler and Mary Sheldon adapted an original plan by the Swiss landscape architect Jacob Weidenmann for their Victorian ornamental garden on Hartford’s Main Street. The formal parterre garden features low boxwood hedges with beds of roses\, perennials\, and annuals connected by winding stone paths. It is lovingly cared for by the West Hartford Garden Club. DESCRIPTION:Suffield is often described as a “town of farms.” More specifically\, we like to say that it is home to a “town of flower farms.” The Phelps-Hatheway School of Floral Arts was created to showcase the magnificent blooms grown in our small community and\, for the final session\, in our great state of Connecticut. All ages and abilities are welcome! \nEmbrace history and horticulture during a special summer morning escape. The day begins at Suffield’s Willow View Farm where owner Julie Harrison grows flowers adjacent to the town’s oldest house. After a brief farm tour\, guests may pick a large cup full of flowers. After\, retire to Phelps-Hatheway House’s late 18th-century carriage house\, where we will take in the garden while enjoying beverages and pastries. A special tour of the museum’s interiors will trace the importance of gardens and floral design from the 18th-21st centuries. \nRegister Now\n\nRefreshments will be served and a tour of Phelps-Hatheway House’s historic interiors will be available.  \n\nTickets are $55 for CTL Members and $65 for the general public. Lynn will share the history of these bulbs and how to encourage a long-lasting display. All materials included.
