DESCRIPTION:Stop into Phelps-Hatheway’s Visitor Center for the Seasons of Change art exhibition by Laurie Tavino and Ray Pioggia. In this exhibit\, photographic and hand-rendered images in color and monochrome depict scenes and themes from locations throughout Suffield – a number of which are views that no longer exist. \nWe invite you to join us for the exhibit’s opening reception on Friday\, May 1\, from 5 pm–7 pm in the Visitor’s Center. Laurie and Ray will be on site to answer questions as you gather with friends and neighbors to take in the beauty of this special offering. \nThe exhibit will be open during the property’s regular open hours this season through November 1. SUMMARY:Following Death: Cemetery Walk & Talk
DESCRIPTION:Explore the burial customs\, traditions\, and superstitions around death in New England from colonial times through the 19th century with Dean Massey\, an urban planning researcher from Northeastern University. Following the talk\, a short walk to the Warner Cemetery will offer provide an opportunity to examine epitaphs and iconography up close\, and engage in a discussion about the rich diversity of New England’s remembrance practices. Tour the first floor of the Palmer-Warner House and join us as we celebrate the end of our season with warm cider and chestnut roasting. \nDean Massey lives in Providence\, Rhode Island. He has strong ties to Connecticut: he grew up in a small town east of the river filled with historic cemeteries\, studied at Connecticut College\, and worked at the Connecticut General Assembly. In his spare time\, he enjoys visiting house museums\, tracking down gravestones by masters like Zerubbabel Collins\, and hiking in the woods. He has visited every Connecticut Landmarks property\, starting with the Nathan Hale Homestead as a child. \nTickets to the Walk & Talk ONLY are $10 per person. DESCRIPTION:Get into the spirit of the season and meet the ghosts of New Londoners who have ghoulish stories to tell—talk with them if you dare! Experience the city’s oldest house at twilight and make s’mores over an open fire \nAdmission is FREE\, with a suggested donation of $5 per person to support programming at the Hempsted Houses. Advance registration available\, but walk-ins are welcome! \nRegister Now\n\nParticipants are welcome to come in costume. Please refrain from extreme gore\, masks that cover the whole face or head\, tripping hazards\, or using cultural identities as costumes. Please dress for the weather as parts of this program take place outdoors.
