SUMMARY:Pastel Paintings Art Exhibit: Gina Trusiewicz
DESCRIPTION:Stop into Phelps-Hatheway’s Visitor Center for the Pastel Paintings exhibition by Gina Trusiewicz. With a longtime interest in art\, Trusiewicz developed her craft in an online class during the pandemic. Her interest in nature\, animals\, and plants\, combined with her certification as a Master Gardener\, has inspired the work for this exhibit–capturing everyday moments in West Hartford or right from her own backyard through the medium of soft pastel sticks. She also aims to capture the feelings these moments evoke; whether it be the brightness of the sunshine\, the iridescence of a flower\, or the sweet look on the face of a neighborhood bear as he has finished raiding the neighbor’s garbage can. \nAn opening reception will be held on Saturday\, May 17 during the Suffield Garden Club’s 47th Annual May Market. Gina Trusiewicz will be on site from 1 pm-3 pm. \nDuring the museum’s open tour day on September 14\, Trusiewicz will be onsite from 1 pm–2 pm to demonstrate the art of pastel painting. \nThe exhibit will be open during the property’s regular open hours this season. DESCRIPTION:This exhibit will celebrate the power of written communication in shaping LGBTQ+ identity\, activism\, and community. From love letters to zines and personal diaries to protest flyers\, these artifacts tell the stories of resilience\, connection\, and creativity that have sustained LGBTQ+ communities across generations. Using the Palmer-Warner House’s collection and loaned items\, this exhibit will weave together your stories with the stories of the house’s previous residents\, Frederic Palmer and Howard Metzger\, who created a safe space together in East Haddam. DESCRIPTION:Join staff and guest speakers this summer for special talks exploring the history of the property. Topics include:  \n\nSurvivors of Ravensbrück\, Hitler’s only all-women concentration camp during World War II with Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden staff on July 19  \n\n\nBellamy-Ferriday House & Garden’s Collections with collections manager Erin Farley & museum interpreter Nick McCarthy on July 26  \n\n\nOn August 2\, Bellamy-Ferriday House & Garden site administrator Peg Shimer will lead a discussion about those who worked on the property by force or by choice.
