DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Thank you for your interest in attending the Shaw Mansion Sleepover from June 7-June 8\, 2024. Registration is now closed as we have reached capacity for this event. Those who filled out the event inquiry form will be contacted via the email address provided. Please visit slavedwellingproject.org to learn more about Joseph McGill’s work and discover other Slave Dwelling Project events.  \nVisitors will have the opportunity to meet Joseph McGill on Sunday\, June 9 at the Phelps-Hatheway House in Suffield\, where he will be signing copies of his most recent book\, Sleeping with the Ancestors. The book will be available for purchase in the gift shop. Learn more about that event here. \nJoin Joseph McGill of the Slave Dwelling Project as well as staff from the Hempsted Houses and the Shaw Mansion as we continue the conversation around the truthful narrative of American history and the legacies of slavery. \nThe Shaw Mansion was built in 1756 for captain Nathaniel Shaw and was home to ten enslaved people. On his deathbed\, Nathaniel Shaw Jr. emancipated all ten enslaved people in 1781. During the conversation\, participants will learn about the lives of Caesar Shaw\, Celia Shaw\, James Tilley\, and Prince who were four of the ten enslaved people on the property. \n\nThis program is part of the Hempsted Houses’ Juneteenth Festival. SUMMARY:Palmer-Warner Pride Month Open Tour Day
DESCRIPTION:The Palmer-Warner House is open for tours on Saturdays\, June 1-22 from 12 noon–4 pm in celebration of Pride Month! Specialty tours of the home will introduce visitors to its residents and explore the themes of Equity\, Unity\, and Reflection. A Historic Timeline of Connecticut’s LGBTQ Community on loan from the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History will be on view in the barn. Join us on Saturday\, June 29\, for our culminating celebration in partnership with the East Haddam Historical Society. \nRegister Now\n\nExplore the contemporary lives of preservation architect Frederic Palmer and his partner Howard Metzger. Together\, they created a safe space for friends and family to gather and experience life unrestrained by societal norms within the beautifully constructed landscape they designed and personally maintained. \nThe 1738 residence was built by John and Mehitable (Chapman Richardson) Warner. Later generations of the Warner family would become blacksmiths\, and many of their pieces were collected by Frederic Palmer and can be seen throughout the house today. \nA visit to the site includes a behind-the-scenes tour in which guests can learn about the collection of personal diaries and photos used to reconstruct the lives of Frederic and Howard\, providing an opportunity for guests to discuss society’s impact on the thoughts and actions of the house’s former residents. \n\nAdvance reservations for tours appreciated\, but walk-ups welcome as space permits! Tours leave on the hour; last tour departs at 3:00 pm. \nPurchasing an Adult or Child ticket secures your spot on a timed tour of the Palmer-Warner House\, and provides access to the scenic grounds and the exhibit in the barn. Walk-up tours will be accommodated as space permits.
